Advice about a job =)?

Well im starting a new job in a clothes store, i basically have to walk up to the costumer and ask them if they need help and stuff, the awkward thing is that the manager told me that if they dont need help i still have to be behind them showing them clothes and stuff....do you guys have any tips i could use?? i would really appreciate it =)Advice about a job =)?
do whatever ur manager says.....but i would suggest that u keep a bit distance away from the customer after saying that u are close by and feel free to ask for clothes and stuff if needed later, if he/she turns down your approach earlier, in order not to offend themAdvice about a job =)?
It does sound a bit awkward. I'm don't think I've had that happen while I've been out shopping. Hopefully, there are other clerks in the store who you can observe and get tips from. You may also find that they don't actually follow this rule hard and fast.
